Locomotive Repair Guide

Getting the most out of a DCC conversion requires your locomotive to run well on DC Analog first.

Basic maintenance procedures should be followed for older locomotives, clean the wheels and pickups.

Lubricate the moving parts lightly, with the recommended oil or grease, as well.

The Instruction sheet that is packaged with the locomotive is a good guide to lubrication points and general maintenance and also for the disassembly of the basic parts.

Finding parts is sometimes difficult and language can be a barrier as well.

Here are some guides to help.

  1. Hi, very interesting as I am trying to disassemble & clean a very dirty Fleischmann BR141(#4327) - here a link

with the intention of converting to DCC. However the body is stuck and there doesn't seem to be any fixing screws .

Any tips for me? I don't want to break the body

  2. Hi Glasairman,

The service sheet show no retaining screws,
You can find service sheets online at Fleischmann or Hobbyparts -http://www.hobbyparts.nl/service-sheets/fleischmann/fleischmann_4327_1994.pdf

I have a good collection of these and others on the Illustrated guide as well.

It looks like there are four retaining tabs on the body about where the steps are , a bit of otward pressure and they should release. The Fleischmann BR218 deisels are the same with tabs holding the majority of the body to the chassis. I have not done the BR141 , but it is on my to do list!

  3. Hi, this is an excellent blog and you clearly have a lot of skill in detailing!

I was very happy that you showed a link to a supplier of Fleischmann isolated backplates. Unfortunately the hobbyparts.nl people are saying at they are no longer supporting fleischmann. Do you know of any other suppliers?

    Kind regards

  4. Hi Andrew, Sorry for the delay in reply.

The isolated back plates are available from any Fleischmann dealer. Hobby parts are unfortunatly not continuing with Fleischmann parts but still have some stocks of older parts.
If you get stuck let me know as I keep a bit of stock myself.

    Cheers

    1. Ric,

New subject, I am building a HO, DC and DCC train Layout. I would like to know the best method to support a double reverse loop module using Rocco DCC trains. The Double reverse loop module will be mainly DCC (ROCO Trains). I will be using manual track turn-outs (but may change later to automatic turn-outs in the future). At times I would like to use my DC Fleischmann trains to run on the double reverse loop model so the design needs to support DC operations also. What products are there that I may order the right train equipment to support this operation? I have looked at many web site and believe the right package may be the double Reverse Loop with MREV Controller??? Cost about $175. Please verify. Please forward reply to e-mail below.

      Thanks,

      Ken

  5. Hi Ken,

I had a look at the MREV Website and the unit does make the job look easy. The thing to take in account with most of the reverse loop modules is that the maximum train length cannot exceed the length of the isolated section in the loop. Some manufactures do not specify this but it is good practice and less chances of a short occuring when the directions of the signal switch over. I have not looked at DC operation before in this method but the MREV unit looks like it can do both.

    Cheers

  8. I have two Fleischmann locomotives HO [ both fairly new ] that have had the coupling rods come off near the piston cylinders due to the plastic insert into the cylinder falling out.
Is this a common problem and where can I get them repaired in Kent, England.

  9. Hi, do you have pictures of the problems? I'm not sure who would repair Fleischmann in the UK but most repairs are doable with a bit of patience.
